I started in 1996. I was originally a hip-hop DJ, and as I gathered more information, I came across the movie WILD STYLE. That very night, I grabbed some spray cans I had at home and went out to paint.

I started doing graffiti in the 90s when there wasn’t much information available. I just did what felt right, and by repeating the same things, I developed my current style. Although I once tried to pursue fresh new styles, now I just do what comes naturally.

In 1998, I met SIBL and NAO, two writers from San Francisco who came to Japan. They taught me a lot. In 1999, I went to San Francisco and had many experiences that shaped my current perspective on graffiti.

I’ve always been taking photos, so I wanted to make my own magazine one day. In 2003, I made my first one. Back then, I was often in Korea, so I had it printed there. Printing was cheaper than in Japan, but shipping by boat cost me ¥160,000, and I didn’t account for that. The issues arrived damaged from the shipping process. From ISSUE 2, I started printing in Japan. I wanted to show the world I had seen through my graffiti and the photos I took during my travels across Asia and other places. It’s a mix of wanting to contribute to the culture and also a bit of self-promotion. I was really happy when I met someone who had been influenced by my magazine and listened to their stories.

It’s really tough, but I’m trying to move things in a better direction. There’s this old rule from the Aizu Domain, "What must not be done, must not be done," and a lot of people here like that kind of mentality. Many Japanese prefer to live a safe and peaceful life, which means they like their walls clean and white. I wish it could be more like New York, but that’s a conversation that just doesn’t line up.

Before the law, I focus more on the rules of graffiti and my own personal code of things I shouldn't do. I target places like telephone poles, guardrails, and abandoned buildings, but I don’t want to paint on things that people care about.

It depends on the country. Sometimes foreign writers act freely without respecting the local culture and bomb old buildings. In places like Indonesia, the scene is almost entirely run by local writers. I think the graffiti jams in Asia are a lot of fun and are more like festivals. In the U.S., there’s more competition and confrontation, so everyone keeps raising their level to avoid losing.

Before 2005, many Asian countries had very few people using the internet, so traveling to do graffiti was full of surprises. We both gave and received a lot from those experiences. Nowadays, everyone uses Instagram, and information is everywhere. Even spray cans have improved. Back then, we struggled with local cans, but now there are graffiti-specific spray paints made in Asia. With the right tools and information, we should be taking things to the next level instead of just imitating others or engaging in beef.

In the U.S., you have to work hard to get your name known. You have to put your name out there, and since there’s a lot of buffing, you have to keep going. There’s a lot of conflict too—police, gangs, and racial discrimination. But in the U.S., if you’re good at something, you’ll get respect, and if you keep at it for a while, the situation will change. I learned a lot from that. Spain had a more free and fun graffiti scene, and the food was great. Eastern Europe’s styles are really unique. I was shocked because I saw styles there that didn’t exist in the U.S. or Japan. I was even influenced by the eerie and strange styles of Eastern Europe.

I had a tough time with arrests, detention, and court cases in NYC, but I was happy to see tags by SKUF and UFO at the fines window. In the Czech Republic, I was writing on a train when the police chased me. I lost my friends and ended up wandering through a dark forest I had never seen before, filled with unfamiliar trees and plants. I remember looking up at the sky and seeing Orion’s Belt, which helped calm me down a bit.
